What makes NLP techniques so effective
Many experts claim that NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) can do amazing things, such as cure phobias, change bad habits, develop self confidence and do all this in a very short period of time. That seems hard to believe but if you know how NLP works, youll understand why it is so effective.
NLP works by making use of our subconscious mind. Our subconscious mind is the part that controls our emotions, beliefs, habits. The conscious mind on the other hand is the analytical, logical and thinking part of the mind.
Whatever is inside your subconscious mind literally dictates your life. This is because our subconscious mind controls our beliefs, fears, habits and emotions ” and these are the things that control your actions and thoughts. Your subconscious mind is why you keep on doing something even though you intellectually know you shouldnt.
These beliefs, habits etc that we have was not consciously decided by us. Rather, it was developed from the past events and experience in our lives. Obviously, a man with phobia for flying did not decide to have that phobia. Something triggered that, such as a really bad flight experience.
Before a thought, idea or message goes into the subconscious mind, the conscious mind will first filter it to ensure that not every single idea or message gets accepted into the subconscious mind. Instead, all thoughts and ideas will be first analyzed by the conscious mind based on past experiences, events and references.
Although the filter by the conscious mind is meant to be a survival tool which simplifies the way we live our daily lives, it also brings many limitations along with it. Due to its logical and analytical nature, many people end up developing limiting beliefs because of the conscious mind filter. For example, any past experiences of failures would be interpreted by the conscious mind as inherent weaknesses or inability.
So, though we want the conscious mind to be giving us a structure of reality to help us survive, we would also want to be able to control what goes through the filter or not. This is exactly where NLP comes in.
NLP works by giving us the ability to bypass the conscious mind (thus avoiding the filters) and implant a message or an idea into our subconscious. This is why it can bring immediate results. Normal therapy requires you to slowly chip away at the filter. With NLP techniques it goes directly to the subconscious.
The feeling I get when using NLP is that I am no longer communicating to my brain in a language it cannot understand. Rather, it is like I am programming it with the compatible programming language.
