A Richer Sort of Life at Hawaiian Fairs and Festivals

by Rick Amorey

I love living in Hawaii. It is the absolute paradise, with the warmth caring for your skin, the sound of the calming waves, and of course, all the beautiful girls. Right now, there is nowhere I’d rather be than in Hawaii.

However, things weren’t like this in the beginning. I was originally from a different part of the United States and I just moved here recently. The same old routines of my old life became so monotonous I had to get up and leave.

A move to Hawaii is not easy. I had to check my bank accounts and make doubly sure I had enough funds to get me through the move and keep me fed while looking for something more stable. I had no friends or relations in Hawaii, so you could say that it was quite a risk I was taking. I was hesitant, of course, but I decided in the end to just go for it. I believed my savings could handle it. I just had to be smart and save a significant amount of money, just in case.

So I got to Hawaii as a vacation at first. As I looked around, however, I quickly figured out that my skill set would not be adequate to get a decent job here. So, I was resigned to just go home, and take this as a normal vacation.

One night, however, whilst I was surfing (online, not on the waves), I stumbled upon a website that keeps a list of scheduled craft fairs and festivals that occurred in Hawaii. I’m not one to boast about my talents, but I am pretty skilled in woodcarving, if I do say so myself. I got to thinking this may be an opportunity to earn a little extra whilst I’m still without a job.

My only concern was that I’d be competing with genuine Hawaii-made craftworks. My own style of woodcarving looks a lot different and I myself don’t care much for the particular Hawaiian style of carving. I have tried once or twice, but my heart really wasn’t in it, so I gave it up.

As it happened, I needn’t have been worried. While my crafts were not noticed by many of the tourists, I was a definite favorite among the locals already living there. They liked the change of style from what they were used to and urged me to join the next craft show. So, things turned out pretty okay in the end.
